Canon expands Flex Zoom Lens series line-up of EF cinema lenses with new Super 35mm sensor compatible products

3rd April 2023

New lenses enable cinema-style operability and flexible, efficient video production

the CN-E 14-35mm T1.7 L S / SP wide-angle zoom lens and the CN-E 31.5-95mm T1.7 L S / SP telephoto zoom lens

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 3 April 2023: Canon Australia today announces two new additions to its FLEX ZOOM LENS series of EF Cinema lenses, the CN-E 14-35mm T1.7 L S / SP wide-angle zoom lens and the CN-E 31.5-95mm T1.7 L S / SP telephoto zoom lens. In addition, the company has announced four new relay kits—the RL-S1, RL-S2, RL-F1 and RL-F2 which are sold separately, as well as a paid relay kit exchange service1. The exchange service replaces parts of the lens optics and converts the image circle so that these lenses can be switched between cameras with full-frame and Super 35mm compatible sensors.

The two FLEX ZOOM LENS series models, released in 2022, support digital cinema cameras equipped with full-frame sensors. Now, Canon is expanding its product line-up with the addition of a wide-angle zoom lens and telephoto zoom lens designed for Super 35mm sensor cinema cameras. The new lenses make natural background blur possible, helping to create powerful visual imagery. What’s more, Canon’s four FLEX ZOOM LENS series models are compatible with the company’s paid mount kit exchange service2. The lenses can be converted to EF mount or PL mount using a dedicated mount kit, which is sold separately3. This offers adaptability with a range of cameras and helps supports a variety of shooting styles.

Designed in the pursuit of cinematic beauty, these new wide-diameter lenses achieve superb optical performance compatible with 8K cameras while maintaining the style and ease-of-use of Canon’s EF Cinema lens series. They can be used with Super 35mm sensor cameras to shoot movies, TV dramas, commercials and a wide range of other video content. What’s more, the lenses maintain a bright T1.7 aperture4 across their entire zoom ranges, enabling operators to create powerful, shallow depth-of-field shots.

With the RL-S1 and RL-S2 relay kits, the CN-E 20-50mm T2.4 L F / FP wide-angle and CN-E 45-135mm T2.4 L F / FP telephoto zoom lenses that have been available as of 2022 are compatible with full-frame sensor cameras and can be used with Super 35mm sensor cameras. Meanwhile, the RL-F1 and RL-F2 relay kits work in the opposite manner, enabling lenses used with Super 35mm sensor cameras to be compatible with full-frame sensor cameras. Thanks to Canon’s Flex Zoom Lens series of lenses and relay kits, customers’ valuable lenses will become much more versatile.
